Poetry in the Park Anyone?

After Neil http://dassler.stlouisblogs.org/ set up the Haiku contest I’ve been thinking about how enjoyable it would be to get some poets or poetry lovers together for an evening of reading and discussion. Secretly-well not SO secretly-I’ve fantasized about meeting with a group both the brooding and the blithe to share inspirational work. I must admit the movie “Dead Poet’s Society” is largely responsible for kindling my desire to meet! Here’s a little vignette if you’ve not seen the movie.

The vantage point of the teacher, Robin Williams, is quite freeing…although I don't know how I feel about totally bashing the notion that poetry cannot be ranked. After all, even the film shamelessly tips its hat to Shakespeare and Walt Whitman rather than unschooled, obscure poets.

With that said, I would love for you to join my unschooled self this Saturday, 6:30 in Forest Park, under Saint Louis and his valiant steed (aka “Art Hill” over looking the fountains). Jacob and I are going to pack a picnic dinner along with some munchies to share, so feel free to join us with a blanket, your favorite piece of poetry (your own or somebody else's work-I may bring an anthology).

P.S. There is no pressure to read your own writing, or read at all for that matter, but if you would like to, I'd love to hear it!
P.S.S. Jacob is planning to read a poem or two, so that should be neat!

In case it rains, do you have a cave to go to sound your barbaric "YAWP"?

Ooooh didn't think about that; I'll look into it! Hey, wanna bring your guitar? Wait, are you coming?

Posted by: Heidi Vincent at September 5, 2007 11:58 AM

I'll try and be there. Sounds great.

that sounds lovely, heidi. poetry isn't necessarily my forte, but idea of friends + Art Hill in the evening sounds so appealing that I will definitely try to be there.

Yes I shall try to come- I like this option to read the poetry of others rather than my own!

Glad to see the moon back in motion!

Hey, cool new blog! No, wait there are all these really cool previous entries. Oh, yeah, I remember now ;)

I am working till 5:00 or 6:00 or 7:00 (you never know when this particular job ends), but will try to stop by after with some poetry in hand.

Oh I wish I could, but I'll be out with the family celebrating my sister quitting her job!

Fiddlesticks Peter; I was hoping you’d be our yawper! Well, for those of you that CAN make it let’s meet at the W. F. Pavilion above the Grand Basin (the Grand Basin is where all the construction is taking place). So, IF it’s raining we will meet ACROSS the street from the zoo, ABOVE all the construction, BY the roundabout AT the W. F. Pavilion. If not, we will be meeting ON the grassy knoll below St. Louis and his horse. Yay!

Posted by: Heidi Vincent at September 7, 2007 02:06 PM

I consider this "rainy"- do you? Does that mean WF Pavillion?

Posted by: HEidi H. at September 8, 2007 05:59 PM

Yep, I would call this rainy too; WF Pavilion it is! See you all at 6:30! Feel free to invite friends!

Thanks for pulling it all together, mate! It was a lovely evening- I remember the crackling of the candle as we sat huddled around our hot tea glasses, speaking in turn. We fled the water (rain) to be by the fire. What does that mean!?

Posted by: Heidi H. at September 9, 2007 06:55 PM

Heidi, or should I call you "bride"? That's deep! We fled water-selves to be by our fire-selves? But why? Perhaps we needed the balance?
Snicker ;)
