Philadelphia!?! I am a bit disappointed it was not the Midland, which was second. But I suppose my accent and vocabulary are shaped by influences further east (i.e. Pakistan and Britain). Some people I meet here say I have an accent, some don't.

Philly? I would have never guessed. It's funny cause most the people I've met in St. Louis have very noticeable accents, BUT from places other than St. Louis. I haven't heard many West Coast accents in these parts. Well, I take that back Dan Wachsmuth sounds very West Coast; he's from Oregon.
Do you say pop or soda?
Posted by: Heidi Vincent at March 21, 2007 10:57 AM
Soda all the way! My Mom's mom and some of my other relatives here, would say "sodee." They come from Southern Illinois.

The first time Jacob said he wanted a “soda”, I thought he was talking about soda water.
I say pop...you know like what the bubbles in pop do.
My mom used to call all pop "coke". She would say "What kind of coke do you want?" I preferred Sprite Coke. Her family was from the south.
P.S. The only blogger I'm 100% sure of what their accent will be is Claire (unless her accent has changed...which I suppose could happen).

"The Midland"- they nailed it, naming Indiana, Southern Illinois, Missouri and Dallas- all the places I have lived. Wow.

i grew up mostly using the term "soft drink" and sometimes calling everything coke, but now, after living in cali and the midwest, i say soda all of the time.
in terms of the quiz, i apparently have a predominantly southern accent with the inland north coming in second. yay for roots!

I'm loving how accurate the quiz seems to be! Meg, I could see you having a lot of southern influence. Heidi, I wasn’t so sure about your accent; your pronunciation strikes me as pretty clear, so Midland definitely makes sense. Funness!
P.S. I suppose my "huskiness" (as you and Laura pointed out at the art museum) is not a regional but biological. Bummer to that (I say this in my huskiest voice. Tee hee)!

They got it: Midland.

aparently i've been in st. louis too long because mine came out as midland too! i think it's a combination of my mom being a teacher and having to pronounce words correctly for my patients so they don't learn to say things like "balmore" for "baltimore" and "blair" for "belair"

Laura and Claire BOTH midlanders! Wozers that brings us to 3 Midlandanders, 1 Inland Northerner (go great lakes), 1 Southerner and 1 Philadelphian!

i think i'm doubting the accuracy of this quiz a bit. i'll believe it when i hear neil asking where "yous guys" are going and if anyone would like a glass of "wooder" or water as the midlanders would say : )
by the way, heidi, what did you think my accent would have been?
Posted by: claire at March 22, 2007 09:35 AM
I was guessing you would get Maryland dialect or should I say “Merlin dialect,” and I was feeling confident cause you wrote about it on your blog a few weeks back. ;)
Good point Claire; I don't foresee Neil saying "wooder" or "yous".

It's funny to look at the unique the phrases/words/accents we pick up from fam etc.
Jake: "Well" or "Sure"
You: "How bout it now"
Worku: "Eh"
Meg: " Clearly..."
Dad: "John Eldgredge says..." (hee, hee,hee just kidding Papa!)
Posted by: Laura at March 22, 2007 01:17 PM
I don't remember saying "how bout it now". Hum? I DO say "sorry bout it", but I don’t remember saying "how bout it now".
Your right, it's funny how easy it is pick peoples phrases up. I like to say "Oh my land!" like mom. When I'm with you I tend to make strange cooing noises. Each to his own I guess.
Posted by: Heidi Vincent at March 22, 2007 01:51 PM
Heidi, I meant "sorry bout it"! Not sure where the other phrase came from!
Posted by: Laura at March 22, 2007 03:19 PM
That's more like it. Signing off with Cooing and purring.
Posted by: Heidi Vincent at March 22, 2007 03:31 PM
Heidi,What is up w/ this cooing and especially purring? Maybe you sense that I'm more of a dog person and you want to convert me to the CAT!
Posted by: Laura at March 22, 2007 04:03 PM
I'm a midlander. - love your title!
