Folk Dancing

Saturday I went to the market to find the perfect pumpkin. Not only had I found the perfect pumpkin-which I endearingly named Jill-O-Lantern (the stem had a curly vine that said “girl”)-but in a matter of minutes, I had been lavished with unexpected treats: two Lewis Carroll classics for $.50 (a woman was by peddling her life long library), free zucchini bread from a Harvest Bread Co., and chocolate from one of the supplying companies for the Bailey’s Chocolate Bar. I was just about on my way out when I noticed speakers and a microphone up on the little stage in the square. As my friend Nichole informed me last week, I am not known to leave an environment if I suspect singing or dancing. I dipped my hands in the shea butter displayed at one of the corner booths to give Jill a polish as I waited for the festivities. That's when I spied about 9 women in broom skirts and colorful sashes accompanying a guy in a strange polish hat. They all grabbing hands until they were positioned like a sting of paper-dolls. The older man in the cap nodded and beautiful Romanian music with accordions and lilting voices transformed the little market into a remote and rustic village in the hills of Eastern Europe. I knew it meant one thing…DANCING! How exciting! The first song they danced a traditional Romanian dance, the second Croatian, and by the time they were on to Lebanon I had been swooped up into the line hardly conscious of what country was being representing. We danced for about a half hour. So great! When they were done I found out that they offer a cheap folk dancing class Monday nights…only $2 a session! No experience required! So, for all of you that are just aching to dance, feel free to come (Laura and Claire?) It’s from 6:30-8:00 at the Heman Recreation Center (also know as Centennial Commons) Off of Olive between Midland and Pennsylvania Ave.
Honestly, I don’t think there is anything better than great dancing, and treats in the crisp of fall! Thank you God for your wonderful gifts!
P.S. As Jacob observed; although my pumpkin trip entailed searching for a pumpkin, buying a pumpkin, polishing a pumpkin…I am pumpkinless. In all the excitement I left Jill behind (How dispensationally apocalyptic). She was all shea-butter shiny so I don’t blame the person that snagged her.
Here's the heads-up on folk dance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folk_dance

P.S. The picture is a pumpkin stem under a microscope. Neat!

I'm sorry about Jill-o-lantern. She sounded great.
Too bad I can't make it to folk dancing on monday as I have tutoring that night. Maybe next semester I can switch tutoring to Thursday so I can have Monday free to dance. There is also folk dancing on Saturday night but it's hard to make it to this because social events etc...
Have a wonderful day dear girl!
PS: Have you checked out Rachel and Graham's new blog? I have a link to it on my blog now thanks to Neil! I also have a link to Phil's blog and Hannah and Kevin's.
LOVING YOU!

That sounds like a beautiful day!
Happy pumpkin moment you reminded me of...
I was in Indiana this weekend, and while picking out some farm-fresh apples with my mom, we happened across a country wheel-barrow loaded with pumpkins marked "free!"
Happy folk music moment you reminded me of...
Someday I will tell you how I was lonely and sad wandering a narrow, cobblestone alley in Bella Italia when I had a happy folk-music/dancing moment... It is one of my most fairy-tale memories!
thanks for happy memories!

Crispy it was Ange! I hope the Psalters were great! Heidi H. I'm very much into hearing about your fairy-tale memory. A bit of a sucker for such things.

ooo...cool pumpkin stem! My mom and I were chillin 'in my classroom last night looking at various slides under microscopes.... yeah for God's awesome detail and mom's that will do fun/wierd things with you like that.
I enjoyed your exciting dancing story!

How splendid that your mom likes looking at slides. My dad enjoyed such things too. Once he showed me lice. I was like..."how'd you get lice?" Come to find, out he'd gotten from the combings they used to do during school lice checks. Ick. I asked for no further details-I'm sure he was hovering over a poor, licey child waiting for a specimen...And wow Good point about Anne and dancing!

"Meet me at the wrecking ball
Wrecking ball
Wear something pretty and white
and we'll go dancing tonight..." (EH)
Did you go tonight?
Posted by: Laura at October 24, 2006 12:21 AM
Did I go? Laura! Only paralysis could prevent me from garbing-up gypsy to reel around with other dancers. The time was honey to the heart! I can't wait for the second class. GET THIS: Next week we’re learning dances from Dublin and Sarajevo!
P.S. The troupe’s performing in the loop Saturday-if you want to see it-lots of Israeli and Romanian numbers (1:00 in the square by the market): One UP, two HEEL TOE, three DOWN, four I GO.

So GREAT! I'm glad you got to go. Alas, I'm working Saturday (w/ Grandmother so it's okay!). Maybe you could teach me some steps on Sunday.

We did 10 dances in a two hour period!!!! I don't have any memorized, so, it may take a few classes before I can teach them. The nice thing is, girls and guys dance the same steps...for the most part.
